My Manifesto

Kerbside Recycling

I am in favour of kerbside recycling. We are very fortunate to have excellent refuse collections and it would be an environmental way forward, I would look forward to working with Connétable Len Norman and Parish officials in trying to bring this to fruition.

Honorary System

The honorary system is a very necessary historic contribution to the running of the Island.

Pavements

I know this has been another sore point in the Parish. Pavements are needed around the Parish Church and Le Hocq Hill.

Children's Play Area in the Parish

I would like to see a children's playground in the Parish. I remember when my girls were small that there was nowhere for them to go to play on swings etc around here. I now have grand-daughters and there are still no facilities.

Bus Stop

I think the bus stop outside Brig-y-don from St. Helier should be moved to outside the Shakespeare Hotel. At present when getting off the bus you are standing on the main road. The pavement starts at the Hotel and it would be in a safer position.

Speeding in the Parish

The other big problem in the Parish is speeding along La Grande Route de la Cote and La Grande Route de St Clement. I know that the Parish tried to introduce a 30 mph limit from La Mare car park to just past Green Island, without success.

Glasshouses

It has to be hoped that any unproductive glasshouses will not be demolished and used for more housing in the Parish. A suggestion of using these areas as allotments for Parishioners is one I fully support.

GST

I am totally against GST on food and children's clothes. In 1973 the UK government introduced VAT, but food, children's clothes, books, newspapers and magazines were zero-rated or exempt. We normally follow the UK in a somewhat slavish way, but on this occasion, the States thought they knew best – how wrong they were! The majority of Islanders are against this tax as it affects every single person, from the young to the old. It affects the care homes, hospitals, nursing homes, nurseries etc.

Clothing & VAT

I would like to see UK VAT removed from clothing sold in the Island. Firms who have VAT inclusive prices for goods in the Island are effectively lining their own pockets. They are the ones who are making more money out of us Islanders and it is time we did something about it. The JEP has tried in the past to get action with limited success, it is now time for us all to vote with our feet and boycott these firms. I would like to see some of the cut price clothing stores over here, e.g. Primark.

Household Management Account

I feel that the Household Management Account does not go far enough to help young families on lower incomes. If they work hard to increase their income, then their rent goes up; although they get child allowance, it does not cover things like doctor's fees or dental treatment. I believe there are many people who are putting their health at risk because they cannot afford to visit the doctor or dentist.
