My Manifesto

Education

I believe, that here in Jersey, we have one of the best educational services anywhere. Our schools have well trained staff and they do a marvellous job of meeting the needs of all children and this is reflected in the excellent exam results.

We know that not all children are academic, and I was part of the ministerial team that introduced the new vocational training courses for 14 – 16 years olds. The first year has proved very successful and I feel confident that it will continue to flourish. There will always be a need for plumbers, electricians etc.

I look forward to reading the views of parishioners from the recent discussion paper – Learning for Tomorrow’s World, regarding the future of education in Jersey. I hope to continue in my role as Assistant Minister for Education, Sport and Culture in order to implement some of these views.

Speeding in the Parish

A major problem we face in our Parish is speeding, particularly along La Grande Route de la Cote and La Grande Route de St Clement. Unfortunately there will always be a small minority of dangerous drivers prepared to ignore all warnings and speed limits. Now the Parish has introduced a 30 mph limit, and I know that our excellent Honorary Police been active in enforcing it. I must pay tribute for all the other tasks they perform, and their willing co-operation with other parishes when the need arises.

Island Plan

Our lobbying on the Island Plan was successful, with no large scale development permitted. Our petition showed just how important it is to our parishioners to preserve our precious land here in St. Clement.

Snow Hill Car Park

My amendment to the Island Plan to have a feasibility study implemented at Snow Hill, was successful. This was to see how this car park could be extended, especially as it is extremely popular with drivers coming from the east. I hope that this study will be forthcoming in the near future, and perhaps, it will also make for an easy access to all the sporting and cultural activities at Fort Regent.

Long Term Care

I am fully supportive of the Social Security Minister, Deputy Ian Gorst’s plans for the long term care of the elderly. This is something that is very close to my heart, as my own mother was in care for a few years, and, perhaps with more help, she could have stayed in her own home for a longer time.

Taxes

I did not agree with raising the GST from 3% to 5% as the cost of living in Jersey is so high already.

If re-elected I will continue to do my best to represent all parishioners and to help anyone who asks for my assistance.

I have a common-sense approach and will make my voice heard when dealing with important decisions. I hope you will re-elect me on 19th October 2011.
